Plumbing a new house correctly when building can save money

A new Adelaide home? We can help with your plumbing needs!

Building a new home in Adelaide is so exciting and it’s easy to get caught up on how things will look and feel, however, spending some time thinking about the plumbing at this stage can really affect the longer-term usability of your home.

For big families, for example, you may want to consider two sinks in the kitchen, an extra toilet, or a larger hot water system. Having these conversations with your plumber early in the building process can save money as they don’t have to be worked into the plans later.

In general, there are three main plumbing considerations to keep in mind:

First, getting water into your home. You may like to consider what type of pipes you want to use, whether you will have rain water tanks to supplement the water available to you (and where those tanks should go) and where you want taps and appliances to go.

Second, think about drainage. This includes sewage and storm water and can play into your landscape designs. It’s important to think about drainage from any room that has water coming into it as you want to ensure you don’t end up with costly water damage in years to come. Waterproofing is also an important element of drainage because it can direct water to where it needs to be – that is, down the drains rather than in your walls and floors!

Third, think about the appliances you currently own or want to incorporate into your new home. Don’t forget to think about where things like your washing machine will go, thinking this sort of thing through from an early point can affect how you use your home for many years to come!

At The Plumb King we are experts in helping you get what you want in your new Adelaide home. Give us a call to discuss your plumbing needs early and we can help ensure your new Adelaide home suits your plumbing needs.

Will a new hot water system save money?

Hot water systems in Adelaide: how can I save money on my power bill?

  • It’s no secret that bills are rising here in Adelaide. You might be turning your mind to things you can do to try to minimise your outlay each quarter and an obvious place to look is around your electricity and gas usage.

One of the simplest ways you can save money on your power bills is a new efficient hot water system. As stated by the Australian Government: “Water heating is the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions from an average Australian home and the second largest segment of household energy use in Australia, after space heating and cooling.” (http://www.yourhome.gov.au/energy/hot-water-service).

Therefore, if you can ensure you have the most efficient hot water system for your home, you stand to save some cash!

Hot water systems are expected to last between 8 and 12 years. Anything more than this and you can be sure your system isn’t operating efficiently. Besides age, you can also look out for:

  • Signs of rust. This can mean you have a leak and leakages can become very expensive over time, even if the leak is small.
  • Leaking water. Leaks from your hot water system normally indicate that you need a repair at the very least, and perhaps a replacement if the system is getting old or if the repair will cost more than a replacement.
  • Unexplained noises. This normally means there is sediment build up and a plumber should take a look at this as soon as possible.
  •
You should also consider whether your current system is too big – ensuring you have a hot water system that heats the right amount of water for your family can save money.

Finally, you may also be able to make savings by changing the type of hot water system you are using. The Plumb King can chat to you about the pros and cons of electricity, gas and solar, as well as traditional versus continuous flow systems and help you save money through making the right choice.

Bathroom renovations in Adelaide: how can The Plumb King help?

  • Once you have made contact with us the following will happen
    • Step one – we will visit you at home
      • We will look at things like what floor the bathroom is (as this can affect access), what construction type your house is (do you have  concrete slab or a timber floor, how many external walls will be affected by the renovation, etc), how much cavity space do you have (this can affect which walls we can put pipes)
      • We will ask questions about how you want your bathroom to function – is this a bathroom for the whole family or just the adults? Is the space small and you need to find ways to recess as much as possible into the wall cavities?
      • We will discuss your timing expectations and what other subcontractors will be working on the renovation. It is important to us that we work effectively with other tradespeople in your home.
    • Step two – we will sign a contract
      • This will set out x, y and z
    • Step three – work begins. We will undertake our work at three main stages:
      • At the beginning to disconnect your water and pipes as needed
      • At the ‘rough in’ stage where we can really set in stone our plans for where pipes, fittings and fixtures will go. No connections are made but we can make sure everything is going to work as we have discussed and that all legal requirements will be met. This is our chance to make any last minute changes
      • At the end to fit off

At what point does a bathroom renovation become essential

Bathroom renovations in Adelaide: how long can I put this off?!

  • Renovations can be so easy to put off. Sometimes we live with parts of our home for so long that we forget how unhappy they make us or how inconvenient they are. Other times we simply don’t feel that we have the time or money to undertake the necessary work. However, if you’re getting a niggly feeling that an issue you’re experiencing might be indicative of a bigger problem, it’s worth getting checked out.

Today we’ve put together a list of some red flags that mean you should call a plumber ASAP. Whilst seeing one or more of these things doesn’t necessarily mean you need a full bathroom renovation, they likely signal that you will need to undertake this task in the near future and they should be assessed by a plumber as soon as they are seen to work out whether there is a more serious problem that, if you don’t get onto it pretty quickly, will end up causing you more problems.

    Old plumbing and pipes
Corrosion and rust can cause leaks. If your house is getting on in age and no plumbing work has been done, an assessment by a plumber can ease your mind that an imminent disaster isn’t on its way!

    Lifting tiles
As soon as you see lifting tiles, you should call a plumber to check things out. A leak that has caused damage to the tiles has likely been happening for a while and you want to get things fixed before any structural damage is caused to your home.

    Mould that won’t go away
If you’ve cleaned off mould in every way you can think of and it keeps returning, you may have a more serious damp issue in your bathroom.

    Eco reasons
Finally, it is worth considering the impact your old bathroom is having on the environment. The Australian Government Your Home website states that: “…the shower is typically the biggest water user (34% of indoor water use in the average Australian home), followed by the toilet (26%) and laundry (23%).” (source: http://www.yourhome.gov.au/water). Minimising the impact that something like your toilet has on the environment can really make a difference.

Bathroom renovations in Adelaide: where do I start!

  • At the Plumb King we pride ourselves on our second to none bathroom renovations. And we’ve done a few! We’ve worked with clients from all walks of life and spanning from north to south, east to west of Adelaide…so we like to think we’ve learnt a thing or two about what makes an Adelaide bathroom renovation great. Today, we’re going to share with you some of our tips about what to consider before you get started on a bathroom renovation. These tips relate to the plumbing side of a renovation but if you give us a buzz we’d be more than happy to share some of our more general know-how too.

First up, and this one’s a bit of a no-brainer, you need to consider the cost of your renovation. In particular we suggest you think about the following:

  • Fittings and fixtures. There are big price variations depending on what you want and the look you want to achieve. An example is recessed cisterns – whilst these cost more, they really do look fantastic. If you really need the extra space in your bathroom or are particularly keen on a streamlined look then the cost may be justified for you. It’s worth also keeping in mind that repairs can be more costly in the future due to access issues.
  • Plumbing work. In particular, think about the cost of moving pipes and whether or not you can avoid this by sticking with a similar layout to what you currently have. Keep in mind that moving pipes can have a very different cost associated with it depending on whether you have a concrete slab or timber floors.
  •
Next, think about the size and dimensions of your bathroom. It’s worth thinking through the actual space that you have available to you. If you have a small bathroom being used by a whole family, can we more the toilet out for example to give you more floor space. Conversely, if you have a large space, can we include some extras that will make life easier for you such as a washing machine and dryer? Don’t forget storage space here – you will kick yourself if you don’t have enough.

Our third tip is to consider the functionality of fixtures and fittings. Asking about things like the flow rate of fixtures can really help you avoid disappointment with water pressure once your bathroom renovation is completed. Speak to your plumber about functionality – they will be able to walk you through all the main issues.

Finally, our most important tip for a successful bathroom renovation in Adelaide is to take your time! Don’t rush things, speak to your plumber and the rest of your renovation team and make sure you know what you are getting every step of the way.
