PLUMBING A NEW HOUSE CORRECTLY WHEN BUILDING CAN SAVE MONEY
A new Adelaide home? We can help with your plumbing needs!
Building a new home in Adelaide is so exciting and it’s easy to get caught up on how things will look and feel, however, spending some time thinking about the plumbing at this stage can really affect the longer-term usability of your home.
For big families, for example, you may want to consider two sinks in the kitchen, an extra toilet, or a larger hot water system. Having these conversations with your plumber early in the building process can save money as they don’t have to be worked into the plans later.
In general, there are three main plumbing considerations to keep in mind:
First, getting water into your home. You may like to consider what type of pipes you want to use, whether you will have rain water tanks to supplement the water available to you (and where those tanks should go) and where you want taps and appliances to go.
Second, think about drainage. This includes sewage and storm water and can play into your landscape designs. It’s important to think about drainage from any room that has water coming into it as you want to ensure you don’t end up with costly water damage in years to come. Waterproofing is also an important element of drainage because it can direct water to where it needs to be – that is, down the drains rather than in your walls and floors!
Third, think about the appliances you currently own or want to incorporate into your new home. Don’t forget to think about where things like your washing machine will go, thinking this sort of thing through from an early point can affect how you use your home for many years to come!
At The Plumb King we are experts in helping you get what you want in your new Adelaide home. Give us a call to discuss your plumbing needs early and we can help ensure your new Adelaide home suits your plumbing needs.

New Home Plumbing
The Plumb King Super Group
Main drains
The main drains consist of the main sewer line to the front government connection.
The pipe work is generally ran external to the building if there is sufficient space between the footings and the fence
Best practice states that a minimum of 1m-1.2 is ideal
If this cannot be achieved the main drain can be ran below the footings and through the footings of the house.
This needs to be carried out by a licenced Plumber and inspected by Sa water.
Drains are generally ran in PVC pipe work or HDPE for some commercial applications. Main drains have a minimum gradient of 1:60 m grade
But good practice is to run pipe work 1:50 which converts to 20mm of fall each meter.
Main drains require a upstream vent and an overflow relief gully 150mm below finished ground level
The installation of sewer drains is as follows:
Excavation
Grading of trenches
Installation of pipe work
Testing
Inspection
Backfill
Compaction
Underfloor Plumbing
Underfloor plumbing consists of all of the internal pipe work which connects all fixtures to the main drain
All pipe work is generally installed after the footings are dug
All pipe work must be tested and inspected
Consists of
Excavation
Installation
Backfill
Compaction
Stack work
Plumbing stack work is the suspended drains on a multi story dwelling or building
The pipe work is installed with hanging brackets and expansion joints.
An up stream vent is required and adequate space between the floor joists to ensure required grades are achieved
Pipe work can be lagged to minimise sound if requested but not a requirement
Consists of
Bracketing
Installation
Testing
Inspection
Hot and cold water
The hot and cold water supply can be installed in a variety of products
The pipe work ideally should be ran before the brick work is possible , but can be ran at a later stage
The fixtures must have been chosen and specifications given to plumber to ensure accuracy of all pipe work
Testing is a critical part and all rain water feeds must be ran in green pipe work to ensure no chance of cross contamination.
Consists of
Trimmers set up
Installation of pipe work
Testing
Gas
Gas main installations can be ran in a variety of approved products
The pipe work is generally ran through the ceiling
The sizing of the gas main is critical and all gas appliances need to be accounted for
Testing is a important stage and all gas work must be installed by a licenced gas plumber
Includes
Installation
Testing
Installation of gas appliances
Fit out
The final fit out is the finished product and the finishing touches of any project
This is a delicate process and the utmost care and skills are needed to finish to a high standard
All isolation valves, traps, futures and sanitary ware are installed in this stage
Consists of

Testing
Silicone work
Hot water installation
Storm water
